Saha (Bengali: সাহা) is a Bengali Hindu surname whose traditional occupation is money lending and banking. They are also involved in business, trade and commerce.

Lineage & Ancestry

The Saha migrated from western India to Tamralipta via Magadha in the pre-Islamic period. Due to their initial settlement in Tamralipta, they were sometimes referred to as Tamali, not to be confused with the Tambuli caste. According to Sahakul Parchay, a money lender named Saha arrived in Tamralipta, who is considered to be the progenitor of the Saha caste. After the Islamic invasion in Bengal, majority of the Saha settled in the Vikrampur region of eastern Bengal.
