In 2013, Chemould Prescott Road celebrated 50 years since its foundation (as Gallery Chemould) by Kekoo Gandhy and Khorshed Gandhy in 1963. This makes it one of the oldest established commercial art galleries in India. Always based in Mumbai (Bombay), the late founders' daughter, Shireen Gandhy, now runs the gallery.

Major artists, including MF Husain, Tyeb Mehta, and SH Raza, who emerged on the first wave of India's modernist and contemporary art movements, first exhibited with Chemould. Chemould also hosted the first solo exhibition of the late Bhupen Khakhar (1934-2003).
