Laurie Hummel is a retired US Army colonel currently running as a Democrat to represent Elmendorf Air Force Base and northeast Anchorage in the Alaska House of Representatives.[1]

Military Career

The daughter of an Army Sergeant, Hummel's active duty career in the US Army spanned thirty years, and included overseas deployments to South Korea and Afghanistan, where she was a senior advisor to the National Military Academy of Afghanistan in Kabul[2]. She served in the field of military intelligence for 21 years[3], and moved to Alaska in 1996 to serve as Chief of Operations Intelligence at Elmendorf Air Force Base.[4]. Hummel was both a professor and program director of the Geography and Environmental Engineering program at West Point.[5][6]

Education

Laurie Hummel has a bachelors degree from West Point (1982); masters degrees in Geography (Penn State, 1991), Educational Leadership (University of Alaska Anchorage, 1999), and Strategic Studies (US Army War College, 2006); and a Ph.D. (University of Colorado, 2002) in Geography.[7][8] Her Ph.D. addressed the legacy of Cold War military spending in Alaska.[9]

Personal

Hummel lives in Anchorage with her husband Chad, two cats, and two Saint Bernards. She runs their family-owned property business, and volunteers through Anchorage East Rotary and elsewhere.[10]
