Early life
Maddie Ziegler was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Melissa Ziegler-Gisoni (née Sulo) and Kurt Ziegler.[2] Ziegler's parents divorced in 2011, citing that dance took both a financial and emotional toll on the family; Ziegler's mother later remarried. Maddie Ziegler has a younger sister, Mackenzie,[3] two older half brothers from her father's previous marriage, and two older step-siblings. Ziegler is of Polish, German, and Italian descent.[4] Until 2013, Ziegler attended Sloan Elementary School, before leaving to be homeschooled.[5] Ziegler and her family currently live in Murrysville, Pennsylvania.[6].She also grew up with her BFF Destiny Buchanan
Career
Ziegler began dancing at the age of 2. She currently attends the Abby Lee Dance Company.[4] In 2011, she was a contestant on the CBS dance competition show Live to Dance, but the show was cancelled before her episode aired.[7] Later that year, Ziegler's mother earned a role on Lifetime's Dance Moms, a program that documents the day-to-day lives of the young dancers on the Abby Lee Dance Company Elite Competition Team. On the program, Ziegler appears alongside her mother and sister, Mackenzie, who also dances.[8] In 2013, Ziegler made an appearance on the sister program, Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition.[9]
In 2012, Ziegler played the character of Young Deb on the Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva.[10]
Ziegler has appeared in numerous music videos for artists including Alexx Calise,[11] Sia, and Todrick Hall.[12] Sia's "Chandelier", which Ziegler stars in, received nominations at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards for Video of the Year and Best Choreography, winning the award for Best Choreography.
Ziegler has modeled for various fashion lines such as Glitzy Girl[13] and Purple Pixies.[14] She was the "coverstar" of the summer 2014 issue of Kode Magazine.[15] In October 2014, Ziegler and her sister released a fashion line, The Maddie & Mackenzie Collection, through Mod Angel.[16][17]
On August 14, 2014, Ziegler, along with some of her Dance Moms co-stars, performed in Todrick Hall's nationwide tour, Twerk Du Soleil.[18]
In 2014, singer-songwriter Rachael Sage dedicated her song "Happiness" to Ziegler.[19]
