Madison Nicole "Maddie" Ziegler (born September 30, 2002)[1] is an American child dancer, actress, and model. She is best known for appearing on Lifetime's reality series Dance Moms, and for her appearances in numerous music videos, including the videos for Sia's "Chandelier" and "Elastic Heart".
Early life
Maddie Ziegler is of Polish, German, and Italian descent.[2] She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Melissa Ziegler-Gisoni (née Sulo) and Kurt Ziegler.[3] Ziegler's parents divorced in 2011, citing that dance took both a financial and emotional toll on the family; Ziegler's mother later remarried. Ziegler has a younger sister, Mackenzie (b. June 4, 2004),[4] two older half brothers from her father's previous marriage, and two older step-siblings.[2] Until 2013, Ziegler attended Sloan Elementary School, before leaving to be homeschooled.[5] Ziegler and her family currently live in Murrysville, Pennsylvania.[6]
Career
Ziegler began dancing at the age of 2 and currently attends the Abby Lee Dance Company. In 2011 Ziegler's mother earned a role on Lifetime's Dance Moms, a program that documents the day-to-day lives of the young dancers on the Abby Lee Dance Company Elite Competition Team. In the program, Ziegler appears alongside her mother and younger sister, Mackenzie, who also dances.[7] In 2013, Ziegler made an appearance on the sister program, Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition.[8]
In 2012, Ziegler landed her first professional acting job, portraying the character of Young Deb on the Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva.[9] In 2014, it was confirmed that Ziegler will guest star in an upcoming episode of the Disney Channel show Austin & Ally.[10]
Ziegler has appeared in numerous music videos for artists including Alexx Calise,[11] Sia, and Todrick Hall.[12] Sia's "Chandelier", which Ziegler stars in, received nominations at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards for Video of the Year and Best Choreography, winning the latter. She later starred with Shia LaBeouf in Elastic Heart, also by Sia.
Ziegler has modeled for various fashion lines including Glitzy Girl, Sally Miller,[13] and Purple Pixies.[14] She was the "cover star" of the summer 2014 issue of Kode magazine.[15] In October 2014, Ziegler and her sister released a fashion line, The Maddie & Mackenzie Collection, through Mod Angel. In November, they released their winter clothing line.[16][17]
In 2014, singer-songwriter Rachael Sage dedicated her song "Happiness" to Ziegler.[18]
Philanthropy
Ziegler, along with her mother and sister, are partnered with Starlight Children's Foundation.[19]
