Itegue Taitu Hotel, which was built in 1898 (Ethiopian Calendar) in the middle of the city (Piazza), is the first hotel in Ethiopia. Taitu Betul (1851 – 1918), an Ethiopian Empress and the wife of Emperor Menelek II, established this hotel to provide guests a place to rest and dine.[1]

On January 10/ 2014 a major fire broke out which caused extensive damage on the historic Tayitu Hotel in Addis Ababa.Most of the hotel’s rooms were completely destroyed after the accident.[2][3]
