The Institute of Systematics and Ecology of Animals (ISEA, SB RAS) is one of the oldest research foundation in the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, located in Novosibirsk. It was found in 1944[2] as Biomedical Institute.[1]

General background

The Institute research mission is the study of animal populations and communities structural and functional organization (as the base of living systems sustainable being and evolution) along with community ecology and biodiversity (animal systematics, inventory, monitoring and animal resource assessment).

ISEA international activities include collaboration with researchers from UK and Germany.[3]

History

The Institute was formed as Biomedical Institute[1] in 1944[2] due to the special Order of the USSR Sovnarkom (1943[a]). It was renamed a few times:[1]

  • 1953 — Biological Institute, the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences;
  • 1993 — Institute of Systematics and Ecology of Animals, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences[4].
