[3] Mr Hayashi used Reiki to treat his patients.]] He began studying with Usui in 1920 at age 47 yrs.[4] [5] Hayashi taught the Usui system of reiki under Reiki Kenkyu-kai in Hawaii.Hayashi had a clinic in Tokyo, located in Shinano-machi, Yotsurya. [[After Usui, Hayashi kept the way of Usui's core teaching in tact. Mrs Hawayo Takata was his official successor as Reiki Grand Master or President from 1940 to 1980 .[6].]]

In 1940, Hayashi performed Seppku or 'died by his own blade [[.[11]]] rather than join the war.
