Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor (Dhivehi: އަހުމަދު އަދީބު އަބްދުލް ޤަފޫރު; born 11th April 1982) is the current Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture of the Government of Maldives. He is also the Vice President of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives.

Biography

Ahmed Adeeb was born and raised in the Capital of Maldives, Male' City. Adeeb is the son of Abdul Ghafoor Adam and Shaheema Mohamed. Adeeb is married to Liusha since 2006 and have a son and a daughter, Izyan and Aysha.

Education & Early Career

Ahmed Adeeb attended the iconic Majeediyaa School for his primary education before receiving his degree from Staffordshire University in 2007. He received his Master's in Business Administrator Degree from Edith Cowan University in 2008.

Adeeb began his career in 2001 at Maldives Customs Services. After graduating in 2008 he started work as the Chief Operating Officer at Millennium Capital Holdings Pvt Ltd, before he got elected as the Treasurer of Maldives National Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MNCCI) the same year. He was later elected to the President post of MNCCI in 2011. Adeeb stepped into the national spotlight in 2009 as a young, academic discussing various economic issues relating to the government.

Right After Abdulla Yameen was sworn in as President of Maldives, On November 17th 2012, Ahmed Adeeb was appointed as Minister of Tourism Arts & Culture. [1]

Political Career

Apart from being the Tourism Minister, Ahmed Adeeb is also the Co-chair of the Economic Council. Ahmed Adeeb is a major stakeholder in the Maldives politics.

Rumors About Becoming Vice President

There has been strong rumors that Ahmed Adeeb will soon be appointed as the new Vice President of Maldives. The Leader of the Parliamentary Group of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives, Ahmed Nihan has stated that Ahmed Adeeb deserves to be Vice President. [2]

There has also been a no-confidence motion submitted against the current VP to the Parliament by the ruling PPM. [3]

The current Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed recently Speaking to The New Indian Express, stated that the no confidence motion filed against him was “a constitutional coup in the guise of constitutional reforms” and called on friends of Maldives to “step in” as “they understand what’s happening.” Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb, widely believed to be Dr. Jameel’s replacement, had fired back at the interview.
