Camden Square is a rectangular town square in the London Borough of Camden running parallel to Camden Road north of central Camden. Amy Winehouse and Orlando Jewitt both lived and died on the square, and one of its houses once housed the West African Students' Union. Indian politician V. K. Krishna Menon also lived in a house there from 1924 to 1947.[1] It now has a playground and dog walking area, and St Paul's Church is at the north end. It has a perimeter of 200 metres (660 ft). At the south end is the London Irish Centre.
In May 2012, the property where Winehouse lived and died was put on the market for £2.7 million after her family decided it was inappropriate to live there.[2] Currently the area directly opposite the former singers house is used as a shrine with gifts and letters left by fans around the trees and the fence to the square.[2] In the days following the singers death several 'Camden Square' road signs were stolen by fans.[citation needed]
Temperature records
Camden square holds the record for the warmest April temperature recorded in the British isles, 29.4°C, on 16 April 1949. There are, however, reservations about this value. It also holds the record for the warmest tied May temperature of 32.8°C, on 22 May 1922.[3]
