Ram Nath Kovind (born 1 October 1945, Village Paraunkh, District Kanpur Dehat) is the current Governor of Bihar and a politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party-BJP.[1] Ram Nath Kovind is a Scheduled Caste leader from Kanpur(rural) in Uttar Pradesh.[2] Kovind belongs from the Koli community, which is classified as SC in Uttar Pradesh[3] but not in Bihar. He joined the BJP in 1991. He was elected to Rajya Sabha from state of Uttar Pradesh during the two terms of 1994-2000 and 2000-2006. He is an advocate by profession and practices in Delhi.[4][5]

He is a former President of the BJP Dalit Morcha and President of the All-India Koli Samaj.[6] He also served as national spokesperson of the party. On 8 August 2015 the President of India appointed him the Governor of Bihar.[7]

Career

Kovind was a central government advocate in the Delhi High Court during 1977 to 79 and later central government junior counsel in the Supreme Court of India in the 1980s. He was also the general secretary of the Depressed Classes Legal Aid Bureau in 1986. The senior BJP leader has served on the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata in 2002 and the Management Board of the Dr. BR Ambedkar University, Lucknow in 2003.
