Spray-lining, short for Sprayed-on Lining, is any form of coating that is sprayed on with a spray gun as opposed to being rolled on or applied by another method. The advent of spray-on truck bed liners in the late 1980s in the USA categorized these applications, mainly on the bed of pickup trucks. These became more specialized coatings; stronger, thicker than usual to last a long time and also be slip proof in truck beds. A sprayed lining therefore is known to be this form of protection as opposed to a coating that is not specialized for this purpose. Growth in the spray-lining industry gave way to other applications, onto other vehicles or valuable assets that benefit from this protection and character offered by a spray-on lining. Spray-lining is not just related to trucks and bedliners. It is an industry niche-phrase that defines epoxy, polyurethane and polyurea applications as they are applied to many different situations.

Issues with the term spray-lining

The term spray lining is very general in the industry of coatings and linings. However, some companies use the term spray-lining in their website and/or company name. This can cause confusion when discussing issues with spray-lining versus specific companies. Spray-lining.com is a coating and linings chemical company that provides polyurea and polyhybrid coatings. Because people refer to issues and scams as lining scams, spray lining scams, spray-lining scams, etc. this company has had issues with people confusing general industry issues with company specific issues.

Spray-lining

Spray-Lining discusses reputation management of spray-lining and concerns about the coatings industry. Rhino Linings, Line-X, Speedliner, Scorpion Coatings are some of the top vendors in the industry. But, there are also third rate companies that offer non-functional solutions to spray-lining coatings that just don't do the job. Sub-optimal mil height in applications may sometimes be done by dealers looking to make more money on a bedliner job. Other areas that complaints occur are product substitution, inferior warranty, lack of training, and lax safety precautions.

There are many in the industry that are working towards positive goals in regards to spray coatings whether it be truck bed liners, boats, industrial or agricultural applications. Training by certified spray-lining professionals is a critical point of concern. Bedliner material is not the same as paint. The process for using different coatings varies greatly between vendor. Spray-lining applications must be learned for each formulation as is documented in many articles.

Spray-lining hardware

Any type of coating is much more dependent of quality of equipment used, training & experience of the applicator than a brand. By definition, all sprayed coatings are applied by a person with some form of spray gun and a means of propelling the coating through it with correct flow and atomization to create the desired texture. The functions and qualities of this result in satisfied or unsatisfied job requirements.
