Rana Ayyub is an Indian journalist and political writer previously worked as a senior editor for Tehelka. She currently writes columns in online news portal.

While working for Tehelka Ayyub wrote several stories for the magazine, including an exposé on the collusion of Gujarat police and former Gujarat home minister, and current BJP president Amit Shah, speculating their involvement in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case. Her speculative coverage led to Shah's incarceration.[1] Later CBI court in a judgement gave clean chit to Amit Shah. Ayyub left Tehelka in November 2013. [2] In June 2014 Ayyub again targeted Amit Shah in an opinion piece "A new low in Indian politics" for Daily News and Analysis's online portal. The article, which was highly critical of Shah, was taken down shortly after its release.[3][4][5] In March 2015, following an incident involving rape of elderly nun in West Bengal,[6] Rana Ayyub wrote a speculative article in online news portal daily O, blaming right wing Hindu organizations.[7] Subsequently Bangladeshi nationals were identified as the perpetrators of the crime.[8] Citing several incidents, including the speculations of Ayyub's article from the Daily News and Analysis's website, a July 2014 editorial in the New York Times commented:

Press censorship seems to be back with a vengeance in India, this time imposed not by direct government fiat but by powerful private owners and politicians.[9]

In January 2015 Rana Ayyub wrote an editorial on the attacks on Islam after the Charlie Hebdo incident in Paris. The editorial titled- The French have my condolence, not my apology went viral across the world with her robust defense of secularism and Islam.

In the past Rana Ayyub has been conferred with the newsmakers achievers award and a tabloid rated her as one of the fifty most influential Muslims from independent India who have managed to shape public opinion. The list also included actors shah Rukh Khan, Aamir khan, sports personalities like Sania Mirza, Irfan Pathan and other writers and activists.

Film

According to the Indian Express, an upcoming Hindi film Chalk n Duster has actress Richa Chadha enacting a role which is inspired by Rana Ayyub.[10]

Awards

In October 2011, Rana Ayyub received the Sanskriti award for excellence in journalism.[11]
