Mohan D. Nair

Dr. M.D. Nair is an Indian pharmaceutical scientist whose areas of specialty include Patents, Documentation and Information Management for the Pharmaceutical Industry, R&D Strategies and Management, Project Identification and Evaluation and Development of Biotechnology and Traditional Medicine based products.[1] In addition to that, Dr. M.D. Nair is a consultant to the Pharmaceutical Industry in India and abroad, as well as the current director of Sami Labs Ltd.[2]

He has been credited with providing visionary and innovative approaches through his written works and presentations at national and international conferences and with aiding the Indian industry to become a global player in R&D, Technology Development, Production and Marketing of health care products and services .

Career

Dr. M.D. Nair received his Ph.D. Degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois, USA. He was part of the first batch of Fulbright Scholars from India[3], and a Fellow of the National Research Council of Ottawa, Canada, Alfred P. Sloan Research Foundation, New York and Research Associate at University of Illinois before becoming part of the Pharmaceutical Research Group of CIBA Limited, Switzerland, and later of CIBA-GEIGY Research Centre in Bombay. He worked extensively on New Drug Development, Patents, Documentation and Information Systems and Planning & Control of Production, Marketing and Clinical Trials.

Subsequently, he became the Vice President of SPIC, one of the largest antibiotic complexes in India, and had an instrumental role in setting up for SPIC, a ‘state-of-the-art’ Pharmaceutical R&D Centre, a unit for production of Medical Devices for cardiovascular surgery, a multi-purpose plant for Bulk Drugs manufacture, a Drug Formulations Plant and all the other operations of SPIC Pharmaceuticals Division.[4]

Besides that, he is an elected Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and a Visiting Faculty Member of Management Institutes and Research Institutions in India.

Dr. M.D. Nair has since retired from SPIC, but continues to be an active spokesman for the Indian pharmaceutical industry, participating actively in industry affairs.

Contributions to the Pharmaceutical Industry

Dr. M.D. Nair has served as a consultant and advisor to organisations that include Government and Private Organisations on Science & Technology, as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO). He was also a member on three pharmaceutical projects, the Delegation to USSR, the High Power Delegation and the Task Forces for the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Furthermore, he was the Director of the Boards[5] of many Pharmaceutical Companies, Governing Councils of various Academic Bodies, Universities and Medical Research, All-India Council of Technical Education, Export Promotion Council of India, etc. This includes being President of the Indian Penicillin Manufacturers Association and a Member of the Executive Committees of Organization of Pharmaceutical Producers of India and Indian Drug Manufacturers Association.[6]

Currently, Dr. M.D. Nair is a Member of the Central Council of VHS Hospital in Chennai. He is also the Chairman of the Bahuleyan Charitable Foundation, running their Super Specialty Neurosurgical Hospitals in Kerala. At the same time, he is serving as an advisor to the Apollo Hospitals Research Foundation.[7]

He has also received awards for his contribution to the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry.

Works

Dr M.D. Nair is the author of Indian Pharmaceutical Market Guide 1998[8] published by PJB Publications, London and was a contributor to the textbook, “International Business Law” published by ITP.

He has written over 80 publications in various national and international journals and has co-authored three books published by Academic Press, John Wiley, Birkhauser, etc.

Furthermore, He is a holder of several patents on new therapeutic agents.
