City Stadium (Stadium Bandar Raya Pulau Pinang in Malay, was formerly known as Penang Island National Stadium (Malay: Stadium Nasional Pulau Pinang)) is a multi-purpose stadium in George Town, Malaysia with the home stadium of Football Association of Penang. The oldest built stadium still in use in Malaysia, it was built in 1956 by the British government.[2] The place where the stadium was built originally was a land fill. Previously the main entrance occupied a larger area and presently much reduced. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium has a capacity of 20,000 people. This stadium is currently the home of the Penang state football team & is famed for its vociferous home support dubbed the "Keramat Roar".
History
Penang Island National Stadium (1945-2003)
City Stadium was originally known as Penang Island National Stadium (Malay: Stadium Nasional Pulau Pinang) was officially building of construction on 1 October 1945. National Stadium was completed on 1 June 1948. National Stadium was expanded on 1 May 1950 by the British government. National Stadium was renovated on 1 July 1953. National Stadium was officially inaugurated on 1 September 1956.
City Stadium (2003-now)
National Stadium to becomes City Stadium (Malay: Stadium Bandar Raya Pulau Pinang) was introduced on 9 August 2003.
Exhibition Match
On 15 May 1975, the second exhibition match was played between the Malaysia League XI and Arsenal FC. The match ended in a 1–1 draw for the both sides.[3] The Penang FA also had exhibition match versus BSC Young Boys (Switzerland) Which the match ended in a 1-1 draw on 25 January 1982.[4] Before that, on 12 January 1982, Bayern Munich II also played versus Penang. The match ended in a 1–0 win for the home side.[5]
