Carles Puigdemont i Casamajó (Amer, 29th December 1962) is a politician from Catalonia. He is a member of the Parlament de Catalunya and the current mayor of Girona.[1]
Life and education
Puigdemont was born in Amer (Girona) the 29th December 1962,[2] and he currently lives in Girona with his partner and two children.[3] He studied Catalan philology in Girona's Col·legi Universitari, but his professional profile is that of a journalist. He was the head editor of El Punt, the director of Agència Catalana de Notícies, and the director of Catalonia Today. He is a member of the Catalan journalists' association, and has published several books, such as Cata… què? Catalunya vista per la premsa internacional (1994) and several esays about communication and new technologies.
Puigdemont was one of the founding members of Joventut Nacionalista de Catalunya's branch in Girona.[2] He is also a member of Convergència i Unió, and between 2002 and 2004 he was the director of Girona's Casa de Cultura, and since 2006 he has been a member of the Parlament de Catalunya.[4]
In 2007, Puigdemont ran for the local elections in Girona as Convergència i Unió's candidate, but he was not successful and remained in the opposition. However in the following local elections (2011), he managed to break Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya's 32-year hegemony in Girona and became mayor.[5]
In July 2015 he succeeded Josep Maria Vila d'Abadal as the President of Associació de Municipis per la Independència and was elected as an MP for Girona's Junts pel Sí candidature in the elections for the Parlament de Catalunya.[6]
