So far, we have explored three areas:
- Battery state estimation for diagnosis and prognosis.
- Powertrain modelling - provides a context for what we do.
- Electric machine control to minimize degradation.
As we explore these areas further, we will add to this wiki page. We also intend to incorporate work on fuel cells and power electronics when the relevant models become available.
Battery modelling
[edit]The automotive sector has started to diffusely adopt the lithium-ion battery type. Hence, without loss of generality, we consider the parameterized battery cell model used in[1]. This is a lithium-ion cell modelled as an equivalent electrical circuit with a nominal voltage of 3.7 Volt and a nominal capacity of 20 Ah (see Figure 1). The resistances R1, R2 and the open circuit voltage UOC are functions of the SoC, SoH, current and temperature. Hence the model presents non-trivial nonlinearities. These parameters can be obtained by a combination of offline and online system identification methods and their values are based on the charge and discharge conditions and on the pre-set test data [2]. The offline method uses a series of test data specific for the cell chemistry used, while the online method implements a flexible algorithm that changes while the cell model is running in simulation [3]. In this study, we use the parameters obtained by the identification and parameterization process described in [3].
The following subsections show the derivation of the equations for the cell model. We concentrate on the temperature model, which is one of the contributions of this paper. SoC and SoH models are only briefly discussed as mode details can be found in [2].
1D free-convection temperature model
[edit]The battery model for the estimators is based on a Thevenin model [4]. The schematic circuit shown in Figure 1. The electric circuit consists of a parallel RC network (C2 and R2) and one resistor R1. Additional to this is an ideal voltage source UOC. The current, which is floating through this circuit, is named I. The circuit components had been parameterized through experimental data. For the parameterization procedure refer to [3].
