Radio Stations of Fallout 3 and New Vegas

Introduction

The music of the Fallout franchise is a defining feature in the style and overall aura of the game. The Fallout teams often took "songs that ... took on an ironic level juxtaposed with the violence of the game, meaning that the music could be used to heighten awareness and alter meanings"[1] The classic golden oldies that pepper the two game's radio stations, paint a unique picture of the wasteland that gives the games a unique art direction and feel. Just like films, television and other mediums, the soundtracks of these games are a key components to their success and fans admiration. An article on TheVerge.com declares "The best part of Fallout 4 is the Music"[2]

The success of this classic game is due to many factors, the in game radio stations being one of them. The three available stations are Galaxy News Radio, a pirate radio dedicated to what the game calls "The Good Fight"[3], as well as playing classic music of the 50s and 60s. Enclave Radio is a propaganda station playing age old americana tunes while Agatha's Station plays classical.

An academic and PhD focused on music and sound in games Karen Collins stated her book Game Sound: An Introduction to the History, Theory and Practice of Video Game Music and Sound Design "Music licensing in particular is becoming an increasingly essential element of a game’s marketing strategy"[4]. The Creators of Fallout 3 new this are the music they chose for the radio stations accompany many promotional material all used to create a distinct world that players can immerse themselves in.

"Men and ladies, boys and girls, prepare to be astounded, bedazzled, and otherwise stupefied! I am Three Dog, your master of ceremonies"[3]-Three Dogs Fallout 3

Release Date: 2010

The two stations of Fallout New Vegas sport similar music but vastly different DJs who reflect the two styles the game is known for; old school cool and science fiction absurdity. Radio New Vegas is hosted by the smooth sounds of Mr. New Vegas, voiced by Mr. Las Vegas Wayne Newton, while Black Mountain radio is hosted by wacky mutants that represent the craziness that is Fallout.

Game Developer Joshua Sawyer wanted the stations to " the crooner-style Rat-Pack-late 50s as well as bluegrass and country music"[5], thus the music choices producers had to get rights to reflect this.

The radio stations serve a gameplay purpose as well as K.J. Donnelly, William Gibbons and Neil Lerner point out in their book Music In Video Games : Studying Play declaring "music is used to avoid the possibility of player boredom." [6]

"It's me again, Mr. New Vegas, reminding you that you're nobody 'til somebody loves you. And that somebody is me. I love you"[7]- Mr. New Vegas Fallout New Vegas
