Music of Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4
Radio Stations of Fallout 3 and New Vegas
Introduction
The music of the Fallout franchise is a defining feature in the style and overall aura of the game. The Fallout teams often took "songs that ... took on an ironic level juxtaposed with the violence of the game, meaning that the music could be used to heighten awareness and alter meanings"[1] The classic golden oldies that pepper the two game's radio stations, paint a unique picture of the wasteland that gives the games a unique art direction and feel. Just like films, television and other mediums, the soundtracks of these games are a key components to their success and fans admiration. An article on TheVerge.com declares "The best part of Fallout 4 is the Music"[2]

The two stations of Fallout New Vegas sport similar music but vastly different DJs who reflect the two styles the game is known for; old school cool and science fiction absurdity. Radio New Vegas is hosted by the smooth sounds of Mr. New Vegas, voiced by Mr. Las Vegas Wayne Newton, while Black Mountain radio is hosted by wacky mutants that represent the craziness that is Fallout.
Game Developer Joshua Sawyer wanted the stations to " the crooner-style Rat-Pack-late 50s as well as bluegrass and country music"[5], thus the music choices producers had to get rights to reflect this.
The radio stations serve a gameplay purpose as well as K.J. Donnelly, William Gibbons and Neil Lerner point out in their book Music In Video Games : Studying Play declaring "music is used to avoid the possibility of player boredom." [6]
"It's me again, Mr. New Vegas, reminding you that you're nobody 'til somebody loves you. And that somebody is me. I love you"[7]- Mr. New Vegas Fallout New Vegas
