EnterpriseDB (EDB) is a privately held company that provides software and services based on the open source database PostgreSQL. EDB develops and integrates performance, security, and manageability enhancements into PostgreSQL to support enterprise-class workloads for its database, EDB Postgres Advanced Server. EDB has also developed database compatibility for Oracle to facilitate the migration of workloads from Oracle to EDB Postgres and support the operation of many Oracle workloads on EDB Postgres.[2]

EDB sells subscriptions to its EDB Postgres Platform with the option of EDB Postgres Advanced Server or PostgreSQL as the database. The platform subscriptions include tool suites, upgrades, support, and maintenance.

EDB was positioned in the Leaders Quadrant in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems in October 2014[3] and again in September 2015.[4]

History

Denis Lussier and Andy Astor founded EnterpriseDB in 2004[5] with the goal of "disrupting the database oligopoly with an equally capable product based on open-source principles and development that offered dramatic cost-savings."[6] The company chose PostgreSQL as its technology foundation given PostgreSQL's record over 20 years of large-scale commercial deployments, its thriving developer community, and its reputation as the most robust open-source database available.

Products

EnterpriseDB offers two distributions based on PostgreSQL that have additional features and commercial support. These distributions are available for free download and are supported on several different platforms, including Linux, Windows, Solaris and HP-UX.[7] They include connectors for the most common programming languages and environments, including: JDBC, ODBC, .NET, ESQL / C++, Perl, Python and PHP.

  • Distributions and adaptations:
    • PostgreSQL – the bits developed by the Postgres community
    • Postgres Plus Advanced Server – all the features of Postgres Plus Solutions Pack plus Oracle compatibility, scalability features, and DBA and developer tools [it can run Oracle applications written for Oracle databases by revising the core of PostgreSQL to recognize Oracle's PL/SQL[8][9] as well as handle data replication to and from Oracle[10]]
  • Programs developed by EnterpriseDB:
    • StackBuilder Plus[11]
    • xDB Replication Server[12]
    • Postgres Enterprise Manager[13]
    • Postgres Plus Cloud database[14]

EnterpriseDB also offers services and support options for Postgres, including remote DBA services, tuning, developer support, DBA certification and training.
