Addey and Stanhope School is a voluntary-aided, comprehensive co-educational school located in New Cross, London, United Kingdom. The Headmistress is currently Mrs Anne Potter. The school is part of the Crossways consortium which means that it is one of the four feeder schools to Crossways Academy 6th form.

History

The school’s origins date back to 1606 when John Addey, after making a fortune in shipbuilding, left monies to help the poor of Deptford. The Addey School was founded in 1821. The other founder Dean George Stanhope began his school in 1715 and the two merged in 1894. Addeys’ was one of the first British co-educational secondary schools and they still regard equal opportunities for all as a fundamental goal of the school. After the merger between the two schools Mr Slater became the Headmaster in 1896 and was the Head for 28 years, during this time the presant school building was opened in 1900, the south wing being added in 1933. Addey and Stanhope originally was a Grammar school until 1977 when it became a comprehensive.

Overview

The school has many old students living locally, which results in the school having a treasured and close relationship with the local community. Many past and present staff, parents and students congregate annually on Founder’s Day, a tradition observed since 1907. However the school also supports contemporary local events such as the London Marathon.

The school is considered by many to be a caring, family school with the highest expectations of all students in academic work, social skills and standards of behaviour. Addey and Stanhope is a non-denominational school, however, the school has a strong moral ethos which values and celebrates their students’ cultural and religious richness, but the school has a strong connection with the Church of England and especially St. Pauls Church Deptford.

The School is divided into four houses, two are named after the founders, namely Addey house and Stanhope house; the other two houses are named after two historical figures who had a connection with the local area, they are Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn.

Recent Developments

The School has just finished adding an extra wing to the main building. This new wing will provide the school with brand new classrooms for French and Maths along with a large gym and channging rooms, the building also offers state of the art ICT rooms with the latest computers for the students. The school has been develeping the school site for the past 8 years, the newest wing coming not long after a new design & Tecnology, art and music building which was built in 1999.
