Laura J. Esserman

Dr. Laura Esserman is a a surgeon and breast cancer oncology specialist, who practices at UCSF(University of California San Francisco) School of Medicine.[1]

Dr. Esserman, who directs the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center, is one of only a few surgeons in the United States willing to put women with D.C.I.S. on active surveillance instead of performing biopsies, lumpectomies or mastectomies.[2]

Esserman earned an undergraduate degree at Harvard University and completed medical and surgical training at Stanford University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in breast oncology at Stanford in 1988 and earned a master's degree at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1993. She joined UCSF Medical Center in 1993.[3]

Esserman is a professor of surgery and radiology in the UCSF School of Medicine.[3]

For nearly two decades, Dr. Esserman has sung to her patients as they go under anesthesia. With enough notice, she takes requests.[2]

Dr. Esserman was also named in TIME Magazine's 100 most influential people in the world in 2016.[4]
