Julian Perkins is a British conductor, harpsichordist and clavichordist.[1] His discography includes premières of harpsichord suites by James Nares and John Christopher Smith,[2][3] and clavichord suites by Stephen Dodgson.[4] He directed the first recording of Daniel Purcell's opera-oratorio The Judgment of Paris,[5] which he subsequently performed in London at St John's Smith Square.[6] Other recordings include Johann Sebastian Bach's French Suites on clavichord,[7] three of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's keyboard duets with Emma Abbate,[8] and two recordings of Italian cantatas with his group, Sounds Baroque.[9]

Julian Perkins has been praised for his 'heartening dramatic energy' and 'dynamic direction',[10][11] while his harpsichord accompaniment has been described as 'superbly creative'.[12] In 2009, Julian Perkins performed solo harpsichord at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.[13] In 2013, Julian Perkins worked with the Academy of Ancient Music performing in the exhibition about Johannes Vermeer at London's National Gallery.[14] Julian Perkins has conducted staged opera productions for the Buxton Festival,[15] Dutch National Opera Academy,[16] Grimeborn Festival and Guildhall School of Music & Drama,[17][18] and devised an opera pasticcio about Casanova with librettist Stephen Pettitt that he directed for the Baroque Unwrapped series at London's Kings Place in May 2016.[19] He has appeared live on BBC Radio 3,[20] and contributed to the station's podcast about Handel's Orlando with Welsh National Opera.[21] Concert performances have included appearances as music director for Coram with Simon Callow,[22] Peter Capaldi and Dame Emma Kirkby,[23] and solo recitals in international festivals at St Albans,[24] Buxton,[25] Canterbury,[26] Oundle,[27] Ryedale,[28] Two Moors and Tel Aviv.[29][30] He wrote a brief introduction to the clavichord for BBC Music Magazine,[31] and his article about John Christopher Smith was published by Early Music Today.[32] He is a harpsichord tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.[33]
