Zambezi is an independent creative agency based in Culver City, California. Founded in 2006 in Venice Beach by former Widen & Kennedy executives [1] the agency originally specialized in sports marketing. After buying out its principal owner, the agency’s management team shifted its focus to communications for consumer brands, beyond sports and entertainment.[2] They also moved their headquarters to Culver City. [3]

Zambezi was named to Inc. Magazine's list of 500/500 Fastest Growing Private Companies in 2011, 2012 and 2013[4] and recognized as an Advertising Age Small Agency of the Year in 2011 [5] and 2016 [6]. Zambezi also made the list of 100 Largest Woman-Owned Business in Los Angeles County by the Los Angeles Business Journal in 2016 and 2015. [7] In 2016, the agency’s campaign for STANCE, “Shop With the Force” won a One Show Gold Pencil, an Advertising Age Digital Campaign of the Year Silver Award and a Gold Lion at the Cannes International Festival of Advertising. The agency has worked with companies including The TaylorMade-adidas Golf Company, The Coca-Cola Company, Footlocker Inc., The Honest Company, Las Vegas Sands Corp., Cox Automotive, Champs Sports, Vitaminwater, PopChips, the L.A. Lakers and Beats by Dr. Dre. Early on, the agency earned a reputation for creating a Jennifer Aniston "Sex Tape" for Smartwater, which went viral, with nearly 10 million views on YouTube. [9] [10]


History and Leadership

The agency name comes from the bull shark that lives in the waters of Zambezi, an African river. [11] [12] The agency’s vision is “Putting extraordinary into culture.” [13]

COMPANY CULTURE

Zambezi founder Chris Raih explained the story behind the agency name and described the company culture in an interview with Mediapost. He said "The Zambezi name comes from the river in Africa, but more specifically the Zambezi shark. The Zambezi shark is an extremely resourceful and versatile being in nature. It can swim in saltwater into freshwater. Similarly, at Zambezi, we try to recruit versatile talent. We look for staffers who are able to perform more than simply one function. We demand that everyone in our company be creative, not just in the creative department." [22]
