Synopsis
Template:Spoiler Nita's family goes on vaction with Kit to the South Shore of Long Island. They find a wounded whale named S'reee, who happens to be a wizard. Nita heals S'reee and then S'reee tells Nita and Kit about her old master, Aemhnuu. They are preparing to reenact The Song of the Twelve- a strange ritual that is supposed to suppress the Lone Power, and keep him "bound" to the sea-floor. The Song is a reenactment of when the Lone Power tempted the sea creatures into accepting Death, his gift. Three were undecided, three refused, and three accepted. The tenth representative sacrificed herself to keep Death from reaching the creatures of the ocean, thus binding the Lone One to the ocean. Every now and again, the binding unravels, and needs to be tightened and fixed.
S'reee and the other whales are short of wizards, and ask Nita and Kit to help. Nita agrees to the part of the Silent Lord whilst Kit decides that he's going to be there for support. Nita realizes that her part in the Song is to completely reenact a sacrifice to ed'Rashtekaresket t'k Gh'shestaesteh, also known as Ed or the Pale Slayer. He is a giant pale shark that has participated in a hundred or so Songs of the Twelve. Nita realizes that Ed has to kill her, and she is trapped. She cannot break her promise. Nita and Kit reveal themsleves to Nita's Mom and Dad, because they know they will not come back from this mission.
In the end, however, after a deep conversation between the two, Ed sacrifices himself rather than letting Nita die.
