Furra
Nigist Fura or Furra is a legendary Queen from the Sidama region in Southern Ethiopia. According to folklore she presided over a matriarchal administration earning her praise from women and disdain from men.[1] Whilst there is no historical record of the reign of Nigist Fura she remains a popular legend in the oral culture of the Sidama people and her story continues to be told.[2] Legend has it that she discriminated against men, especially bald and short men[2]. She was considered wise and advised women against submitting to men.[3] Nigist Fura also counselled women to keep men guessing, and cover their private parts as well as taking care of their beauty.[4] Teshome Birhanu published a book about Queen Fura in July 2016 that celebrates her as a visionary monarch.
