Wikipedia: Where scholarship is anathema, intelligence is devalued, words take on new meanings, sarcasm is a substitute for wit, absurdity reigns, rules are cited and broken with impunity, fools are suffered gladly and sociopaths welcomed. Isaac Asimov's notion that "There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been," could just as easily be applied to Wikipedia. The same strain of anti-intellectualism runs through the project, "nurtured by the false notion . . . that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'"

Because I believe that knowledge is superior to ignorance, scholarship to news articles, and skill to connections, I cannot be a real contributor here despite my extensive expertise on a wide variety on subjects and my experience as a researcher, copy editor, and proofreader. I'm hanging on to this account in the hope that one day, the rot will be cleared out and the project can achieve its true potential.
