The Church of the Ascension in Lower Broughton, United Kingdom.

Location

The church is located on Broughton Lane in Lower Broughton, in the United Kingdom.[1]

History

The church was built in 1869. It is Grade II listed.[1]

Restoration

The church was restored using grants totalling £250,000.[1]

2017 fire

On Sunday 12 February 2017 shortly before 11.10pm the church caught fire.[2] The fire took dozens of firefighters[1] with six fire engines to extinguish.[2] Most of the fire was extinguished in an hour,[3] although firefighters stayed at the site overnight.[1]

The roof of the building collapsed during the fire,[2] and the interior was destroyed.[1]

A fundraising campaign to restore the church was launched after the fire, with the hope that the building can be saved.[3]

Greater Manchester Police investigated the fire, and a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson on 17 February, although the origin of the fire remains unknown.[1]
