On July 13th of 2013, following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, protesters took to the streets in Oakland, California. While starting peaceful, the protests turned violent for three days from July 14th until July 16th[5]. Storefront windows were shattered, fires were set in the street from garbage cans and dumpsters, police cars were vandalized, and protesters clashed with riot police. Members of the media were also harrassed and assaulted by masked Oakland protesters[6]. A local McDonalds had its American flag taken down and burned as well[7]. Violent unrest occurred in Los Angeles as well, but beyond these areas, most protests in the United States were peacefully held without interruption.
