Museum of Craft and Design is located on Sutter Street, San Francisco Union Square District, USA and its purpose is to expose modern and contemporary craft and design. It opened its doors on October 23, 2004(SFMCD).

History

Founded in 2004, the Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) allows artists, designers and makers to show their work and their art through series of craft exhibitions. In the fall of 2010, the museum showed its first museums, galleries, exhibitions, educational programs. In 2012, the museum moved to the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Fracisco. (galegrup) (nhostels).

The museums collaborates with artists, designers, other museums and universities. The inaugural exhibition of the museum showed a collection of art and design from Garry Knox Bennett and his wife, Sylvia. This exhibition had the name “Dovelaiting Art and Life: The Bennett Collection” (proquest). The museum offers monthly programs where anyone can experience hands-on projects, 3D designs and printing, both kids and adults. Children's programs offer the opportunity to learn different techniques. This has the purpose of motivate and increase kids creativity.

The museum offers adults the opportunity of participate in workshops, interacting with artists and other people, working with leading artists and thinkers related to the contemporary craft and design.

Events

Hong Kong Winterfest This festival scheduled in 2004 from November 26 until January 2 includes live entertainment, decorations, a Santa Town, Jingle Bell Boulevard and cooking demonstrations(proquest II). Chocolate Festival Scheduled in November 26 and 27, 2004 in the City of Crede, Colorado. People could taste many chocolate variations while the visit this historic business city (proquest II).

Black women artists Scheduled in February, 2004. Parsons School of Design in New York carried out and exhibition with the name “Creating their Own Image”. They offered an examination of the plight of black women in the world, covered by many african women artists, such as Elizabeth Cattlet, Emma Amos, Chakai Booker, Pamela Jennings and Carrie Mae Weems. People could enjoy about 50 paintings, sculpture, photography and mixed media work (proquest II). Wendy Maruyama: The Wildlife Project. Scheduled form February 11 to June 4, 2017, this exhibition ilustrates the strife of the elephants against the illegal hunting and the ivory trade.Many objects are showed, such as life-sized objects from exotic woods,focusing on the preservation of the animals. Wendy Mayurama is a japanese artist and educator whose work is to design furniture pieces with references to her japanese folklore(SFMCD).

Mixed Messages Its an exhibition leaded by Chris Eckert and John Green, it will be opened in Fall of this year, 2017. It consist on an installation of 24 telegraph machines fabricated in the artists studio. The machines has a Morse Code for some specific news organization such as The Associated Press, Fox News, BBC(usquare).


Museum Store

The store features many objects that reflect the focus on art and design, wood, fiber, glass, clay or metal. You can also purchase personal accessories such as handmade as well as special material from the local and international artists that came to the museum. All the earnings support the development of the exhibitions. The schedules are from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 5 pm, Thursday from 10 to 7 pm and Sunday from 12 to 5 pm(usquare).
