Summary

[edit]

Background info

[edit]

The cover of the November 1979 issue of The Progressive magazine, advertising their publication of "the secret of the hydrogen bomb". (See Teller–Ulam design) The cover features a sequence from Howard Morland's drawings of the stages of a detonating hydrogen bomb.

The cover was taken from a PDF of the issue distributed by The Progressive online at http://progressive.org/?q=node/2252 . The image of the bomb itself is copyright Howard Morland (not The Progressive).

Because this cover is itself the primary illustration of a historic event (that is, the publication of a historic issue of a magazine), is being provided at a low resolution, and no free alternatives are likely available, and the copyright holder is clearly identified, I believe the use of this to illustrate the publication of this issue on the non-profit English Wikipedia falls within the "fair use" clause of U.S. copyright law. Any other usage may not be as such.
