On 17 August 2017, a white van hit pedestrians on Las Ramblas, Barcelona, leaving at least two people dead and dozens injured. Two armed men then entered a Turkish restaurant and took hostages.[1][2]

Gàbia operation was deployed by Mossos d'Esquadra in order to locate the perpetrator(s). All events in Barcelona were cancelled, and both Carles Puigdemont and Ada Colau cancelled their holidays so as to return to the city and take part in the crisis management.[3]
