Las Ramblas in Barcelona

On 17 August 2017, a white van hit pedestrians on La Rambla, Barcelona, leaving at least 13 people dead and dozens injured. Two armed men then entered a Turkish restaurant and took hostages.[1][2]

Timeline

At around 4:30pm[citation needed], a white Fiat Talento drove onto the pavement of Barcelona's Las Ramblas, crashing into pedestrians between Plaça Catalunya and Gran Teatre del Liceu[3].

The driver fled as the counter-terror protocol was deployed, despite the Catalan police could not confirm the motive behind the ramming.[4] First reports confirmed two deaths and dozens of injured people.[5]

Soon after, the suspect number rose to two people, one of whom was the driver, allegedly barricaded inside a restaurant armed with a rifle. The second suspect managed to escape.[4]

In the first press conference held by the governmet, the spokesperson confirmed the terrorist nature of the event, a death person and over 30 injured, despite sources rise the fatalities count up to almost 13.[6]

Reactions

Gàbia operation was deployed by Mossos d'Esquadra in order to locate the perpetrator(s). All events in Barcelona were cancelled, and both Carles Puigdemont and Ada Colau cancelled their holidays so as to return to the city and take part in the crisis management.[7]
