Forever GI Bill - Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act

[edit]

In August 2017, US President Donald Trump signed the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act; also known as, "The Forever GI Bill". The law came to pass through a strong bipartisan effort, and was intended to get rid of time constraints regarding educational benefits (for anyone that served after September 11, 2001), increase benefits for Purple Heart recipients, and reimburse service members that utilized benefits at for profit academic institutions that failed (eg ITT Technical Institute )[1][2]. Additionally, the law instated a host of other changes including increased benefits in STEM degrees, a slight decrease in monthly housing allowances, and changes in transferring benefits. [1]
