It is a real stretch to say that Paglia "praises" this book in any notable sense - she mentions it only in contrast with One Hundred Years of Homosexuality, and implies that what virtues it has are due to editors.). Reception

Before Pastoral was praised by the literary scholar Timothy Saunders, who writes that it "still offers the most finely argued case for upholding the distinction between the two categories of 'bucolic' and 'pastoral'."[1]
