Ingleby Barwick [bA.ɹɪk] is a large housing estate suburb within the borough of Stockton-on-Tees[1] and ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. The estate is enclosed by water to the west, north and east.

Administration

The Ingleby Barwick ward (which includes Hilton High Leven and Maltby) has six local councillors sitting on Stockton Borough Council. All six are from Ingleby Barwick Independent Society (IBIS), elected in May 2005. Previously, Ingleby Barwick (which did include High Leven, Hilton and Maltby) was served by one councillor.

Geography

Ingleby Barwick consists largely of owner-occupied properties, along with a small number of recently constructed, purpose built rental properties.

The estate is divided into six "villages". These are not villages in the true sense of the word, but rather six geographic areas. The villages are:

  • Lowfields
  • Beckfields
  • Sober Hall
  • Round Hill
  • Broom Hill
  • The Rings

Rivers

Ingleby Barwick is almost entirely surrounded by water. It is bordered by the Leven to the West, the Tees to the North, and Bassleton Beck to the East.

Amenities

Ingleby Barwick has numerous local amenities. A community centre, church, shops (including a 24hr Tesco), schools, library and Golf Course are all present in the estate.

Healthcare

Ingleby Barwick has three GP surgeries.

  • Thornaby and Barwick Medical Centre
  • Barley Fields Medical Centre
  • Woodbridge Medical Centre

It also has 2 dental surgeries.

  • Andrews & Berry Dental Surgery
  • Myton Park Dental Centre

Education

Primary Schools

Ingleby Barwick has six Primary Schools -

  • Whinstone Primary School
  • St Francis of Assisi CofE Primary School
  • St Therese of Lisieux RC Primary School
  • Myton Park Primary School
  • Ingleby Mill Primary School
  • Barley Fields Primary School

Barley Fields Primary School, which occupies the former site of the old Ingleby Mill School, opened in September 2006. At the moment, the catchment area for the school covers the whole of Ingleby Barwick, but the LEA will define the boundaries of the school for the 2008/9 academic year.

Secondary Schools

There is one secondary school within Ingleby Barwick, accommodating around 600 children. All Saints Secondary School, a Church of England secondary school is located in the centre of the estate. The school was built through PFI funding. The original PFI Provider (Robertsons) have recently sold the investment on to another company making a reported £1m profit. This school provides places for less than half of the children of secondary school age currently living in Ingleby Barwick, with the remainder being schooled at Conyers School in Yarm, Egglescliffe School in Eaglescliffe. Local Councillors are supporting parents who would like to see another secondary school developed in Ingleby Barwick. However, the LEA have dismissed this option and stated the only way to extend secondary school provision is by closing the neighbouring primary school (Myton Park) which shares the same complex.

Some children from Ingleby Barwick still attend Thornaby Community School, although this ceased to be a catchment school for Ingleby Barwick in September 2003 when All Saints School opened.

The original 1977 masterplan for Ingleby Barwick made provision for 2 secondary schools, with a possible third.

Library

The All Saints School complex also contains a community library which is open to the public during specified times, seven days a week. Library facilities include computer access, CD/DVD hire, photocopying, reference section, childrens and an adult library.

Shops and Retailers

There are collections of local shops in the Lowfields and the Beckfields area and also at Myton Park on Myton Road. A Tesco supermarket is also present at the Myton Park site.

Ingleby Barwick faces a number of problems, including traffic congestion at peak times. The local councillors have expressed their annoyance at the large number of residential and commercial planning applications that are currently being submitted by developers both in Ingleby Barwick and on the surrounding green wedge land. The Councillors feel that building more housing before other needed facilities is inappropriate at this stage in the estate's development.

Anti-social behaviour is also a problem in the estate particularly around the local supermarket Tesco and other shopping areas.[2][3][4]
