Sanam Khatibi (born 1979 in Tehran, Iran) is an Iranian - Belgian artist who lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. She graduated in 2009 from Central Saint in Martins, London, Uk with a Masters in Fine Arts. Khatibi works in a variety of techniques, including painting, sculpture, embroidery, and tapestry. Khatibi’s family collection of ethnographic, anthropological and archaeological objects are also an source of important inspiration for the artist.[1]

Work

Her paintings of oil and pencil [2] focus on animalist and humanities primal instincts[3][4] as well as revolving around a group of female figures.[5] These nude female figures, whom she refers to as ‘nymphs’, are impulsive, playful and frequently getting themselves into mischief. They are the dominant predator figures while at the same time vulnerable. The male figures are represented by animals and often appear as deer, crocodiles, snakes, or lions. The relationship between these two sexes is often one of power. Nymphs are often seen riding or skinning animals, though at night, the animals make bestial love to these female figures exploring the interrelationship that exists between the fine line of fear and desire.

Life

During the Iran-Iraq war, Khatibi was forced to leave Iran with her family at only eight years old. After traveling through the UK and Denmark, she and her family made their home in Brussels. Khatibi still holds memories of being thrown off her bed from the impact of bombs in the middle of the night.  She also remembers the strength of Iranian women, which was so strong that the regime was never managed to control them.[6] These memories she was never able to forget and in turn aid a political reference in her work.
