Chékéba Hachemi (born May 20, 1974) is an Afghan feminist and writer. She was the first Afghan woman to be named a diplomat, in 2001. She was president and founder of the organization Afghanistan Libre.

Life

Hachemi was born in Kabul; her father, a highly-placed civil servant, died when she was one year old. She left Afghanistan with her mother when she was eleven but they were soon separated. She arrived in France in April 1986. She completed her studies at the École supérieure de commerce in Paris and founded the organization Afghan Libre in 1996 to resist the influence of the Taliban and defend the rights of women by initiating educational projects. The organization also published the magazine Roz, the only women's publication in the country. After the Taliban were removed from government, she served as ambassador for Afghanistan in Brussels[citation needed] and as Minister Counsellor of Foreign Affairs.[citation needed] She resigned her positions in Afghanistan, citing government corruption, and since 2009 has lived in Paris. She founded the consulting company Epoke Conseil with Marie-Françoise Colombani [fr] to promote equality between men and women in France.[1][2]

Hachemi is the author of L'Insolente de Kaboul, a memoir, published in 2012.[3] She is co-author of Pour l’Amour de Massoud, published in 2005, which received a Prix Vérité, and of Visage volé, avoir 20 ans à Kaboul.[4]
