Oyster Marine is a British brand of luxury cruising sailing yachts established in 1973. The company is based in Southampton but has a strong link with Norfolk, Oyster fit out all their boats, with smaller models being built in Hoveton near Norwich and the larger yachts in Southampton. In February 2018 the company ceased trading and went into Administration.
History
In 1973 Richard Mathews commissioned the IOR 3/4 ton 32ft yacht Unidentified Flying Object, which was designed by the British Naval Architects Holman and Pye[1]. This yacht won the Royal Yacht Squadron's de Mass Cup at Cowes in 1974 and many other races.[2][3][4] The design was developed into the UFO 34, which became the first yacht produced by Richard's company Oyster Marine.[1][5]
In 1978, Oyster Marine introduced a 46-foot cruiser-racer designed by Kim Holman & Donald Pye which pioneered the "deck saloon" feature that has since become the company's trademark.[6] In 1997, they launched a 53-foot design by Rob Humphreys and in 2002 a 62-foot Robert Humphreys' design.[6] Oyster Marine currently builds sailboats from 47ft to 118ft, all designed by Robert Humphreys, and promotes 100ft and 125ft yachts designed by Edward George Dubois and built at RMK Marine in Turkey.[7]
The company was acquired by Balmoral Capital in 2008 and by HTP Investments in 2012. The company was featured in the American series Building the Brand in 2011.[8]
On 5th February 2018, Oyster Yachts, the boat-building arm of the Oyster group (which also includes Oyster Marine, Oyster Brokerage and Oyster Palma) went into liquidation. KPMG were appointed as administrators to Oyster Marine Holdings, the holding company for Oyster Yachts, on the 7th February 2018[9]. On 20th March 2018, Richard Hadida was announced as the new owner.
