José Antonio Sosa (born 8 May 1957, Las Palmas) is a Spanish architect, university professor and researcher. He is a member of the Royal Spanish Academy.

Early life and education

José Antonio Sosa Díaz-Saavedra was brought up in a family with an interest in art and history, especially in relation to the Canary Islands. As a result, he was encouraged to study architecture, graduating from the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid in 1981. In 1994, he earned a Ph.D at the School of Architecture, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Teaching

In 1982, he started to work at SIANI, University Institute of Intelligent Systems and Numerical Applications in Engineering in the ULPGC, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Later, after completing his doctoral studies, he is dedicated to the chair of architectural projects for the Department of Graphic Expression and Architectural Projects at the EALPGC, School of Architecture of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, where he has been since 1994.

After completing his doctoral studies, he entered to the Department of Graphic Expression and Architectural Projects of the EALPGC, where he has been since 1994. He is also a member of the SIANI, the University Institute of Intelligent Systems and Numerical Applications in Engineering in the ULPGC, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

In different occasions since 2000, he has been invited professor by the Department of Architecture, to the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, also he participates as jury in several universities as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH (Studio Basel).[1]

Main architecture contributions

José Antonio Sosa has been the main proponent of modern architectural development in the early twentieth century in the Canary Islands and Spain, promoting its place in the history of urban and cultural heritage. As a result, he was appointed a member of the Royal Spanish Academy.[2][3][4][5]

Within the professional environment, together with Magüi González Sosa founded the Nred Architects Group developing a number of notable projects including the City of Justice (New Law Courts Headquarters) and the restoration of the Casas Consistoriales (Town Hall Houses) in las Palmas.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

Currently with Evelyn Alonso Rohner, Sosa has his own study of architecture and urban planning. They also collaborate editorially on Arquiatesis, publishing dissertations and research results.[13][14]
