He is the current Commissioner of the Chennai State Police[1] (as of May 2017). He was the former ADGP/Additional Commandant General of Home Guards. Previously, Dr. Viswanathan served as the Additional Commissioner of Police in Chennai and the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore. He holds a Ph.D in Criminal law from Madras University.

Early Life

Dr. Viswanathan is a third-generation police officer[2] in his family. His father, Aiyasamy entered the police department as the sub-inspector and rose to the rank of the Superintendent of Police. His grandfather, R.Perumal retired as the Head Constable. His wife, Seema Agarwal is an ADGP rank officer of the Tamilnadu cadre.

Career

Dr. AK Viswanathan served as the Additional Commissioner of Police in Chennai and the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore. He also served as the Superintendent of Police, Special Branch, in the State Intelligence. He even had a stint as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Special Branch, CID. Apart from this he was also the Joint Director of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. AK Viswanathan was the recipient of the President's Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2006[3]. [citation needed]
