Matthew Christian Reinhart (born September 21, 1971)[1] is an American writer and illustrator of children's pop-up books and picture books. His most recent books include Pixar: A Pop-Up Celebration, Frozen: a Pop-up Adventure and Lego Pop-up: A Journey to the Lego Universe. He was born to Gary and Judith Reinhart in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His father joined the Navy and the family moved around the country, including Florida, Texas, Illinois, California, Virginia, and South Carolina. He has a sister named Erin.

Art was always a huge part of Matthew Reinhart’s young life. Drawing pictures and making crafts were his favorite activities, in school and out. Matthew drew whenever and wherever he got the chance; in fact, school notebooks often had more drawings than notes! He loved drawing and reading about all creatures and animals so much, he drew them everywhere!

Career

After working with Sabuda on books such as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, A B C Disney and Movable Mother Goose, Reinhart made his first entry into the pop-up book field with The Pop Up Book Of Phobias.[2] Reinhart has created many award-winning pop-up books, including Cinderella, Star Wars: The Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy and Mommy? (by Maurice Sendak and Arthur Yorinks). He is the co-creator with Robert Sabuda of the New York Times best-selling three-volume pop-up series Encyclopedia Prehistorica. The team’s latest pop-up series is Encyclopedia Mythologica which leads off with Fairies and Magical Creatures (Candlewick, 2008).[3]

After high school, Reinhart studied biology in preparation for medical school with the assumption that a career in art was too far-fetched. College life at Clemson University in South Carolina was busy for Matthew, but he was never really satisfied. Medicine was not his true calling, so along with his required science classes, Matthew took various art courses to build up his portfolio.

After graduating college, he moved to New York City for a year before starting medical school. There, he met acclaimed children’s book author Robert Sabuda doing volunteer work together for a local community center. Robert’s book, Christmas Alphabet had just released to rave reviews, and he convinced Matthew to follow his true calling. The following year, Matthew majored in industrial design (with a concentration in toy design) at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

Pratt was fantastic experience for him, but his initial dreams of being a toy designer soon transformed into paper engineer. After working with Robert on books like The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, A B C Disney, and Movable Mother Goose. Matthew made his first big break into the pop-up world with The Pop Up Book Of Phobias. Collaborations include the New York Times best-selling series Encyclopedia Prehistorica and Encyclopedia Mythologica with Robert Sabuda, Mommy?, co-authored with the renowned Maurice Sendak, and Brava Strega Nona with the ageless Tomie DePaola. His most recent solo pop-up books include Transformers: The Ultimate Pop-up Universe, Disney Princess: A Magical Pop-Up World, Lego Pop-up: A Journey Through the Lego Universe, and Frozen: A Pop-up Adventure. He continues to work and live in New York City, cutting, taping and folding paper into pop-up masterpieces. He also teaches children and adults how to make pop ups through tutorials on his YouTube channel.[4]
