Saman Kunan was a former Thai Navy Seal Petty Officer, who died of asphyxiation while delivering supplies to the Tham Luang cave on 6 July 2018.

He had volunteered to help with the rescue effort and was placing air tanks along the route for future missions when he was unable to breathe and lost consciousness during the return trip. Thai authorities were racing to replenish oxygen in the cave, which was dipping to dangerously low levels because of the large number of rescue workers inside. Kunan was brought to the surface by his dive partner, but attempts to resuscitate him failed. A royal-sponsored funeral in Bangkok has been arranged in his honour.
