Kin is an upcoming American science fiction action film directed by Jonathan and Josh Baker and written by Daniel Casey, based on the 2014 short film Bag Man[2]. It stars Jack Reynor, Zoë Kravitz, Carrie Coon, Dennis Quaid, James Franco, and Myles Truitt. The story follows a young boy and his newly-paroled brother, who find a strange weapon.

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 31, 2018 by Lionsgate.

Premise

Chased by a vengeful criminal and a gang of otherworldly soldiers, a recently released ex-con and his adopted teenage brother are forced to go on the run with a weapon of mysterious origin, which belongs to the strange soldiers, as their only protection.

  • Dennis Quaid[3] as Hal Solinski, Jimmy and Eli’s father.
  • James Franco[3] as Taylor Balik, a crime lord with fabulous hair.

Production

On August 30, 2016, it was reported that Myles Truitt, Jack Reynor, James Franco, Zoë Kravitz and Dennis Quaid would star in the feature film.[3][4]

In September 2016, Lionsgate bought the film rights to Kin for about $30 million at the Toronto Film Festival. Filming began on October 24, 2016 in Toronto.[5]

Music

Mogwai composed the score for the film.[6] The soundtrack will be released on August 31 at Temporary Residence Limited in the United States, and Rock Action Records in the United Kingdom and Europe, and. Two tracks, "Donuts" and "We're Not Done (End Title)", were released ahead of the album.[7]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States by Lionsgate on August 31, 2018.[8][9]

Reception

Box office

In the United States and Canada, Kin is projected to gross $5–7 million from 2,100 theaters in its opening weekend.[10]

Critical response

On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 20% based on 10 reviews, with an average rating of 3.8/10.[11] On Metacritic the film has a weighted average score of 31 out of 100, based on 7 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[12]
