History

Created by Jonathan Teller in 2007, EOS Lip Balm is an egg-shaped lip balm that comes in a variety of colors and flavors. Along with his business partner, Sanjiv Mehra, Teller had his formula tested by dermatologists and made sure it was hypoallergenic and gluten-free. EOS Lip balms are also full of vitamins and moisturizing oils. In 2015, EOS Evolution of Smooth was the second highest-selling lip care in the world, with 11.5% of the market share in the United States.[1] Today, customers can find these lip balms at most retail stores in 18 countries[2] and online through the company's website.

Controversy

Many complaints have been filed to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) about EOS Lip Balm. [3] There were 126 reports filed between August 6, 2014 and June 12, 2017 with customers reporting reactions to certain flavors, including Sweet Mint, Strawberry Sorbet, Summer Fruit, Honeysuckle Honeydew, Pomegranate Raspberry, Vanilla Mint, and Passion Fruit, among others.

In 2016, Rachael Cronin filed a class-action lawsuit against EOS, claiming that the lip balm caused her lips to bleed and blister. The company later published on social media that their products are safe to use, despite Cronin's claims.[4] However, the company agreed to place safety tips on their packaging to warn consumers of potential irritation.[5]

Marketing

To get its start, EOS relied on endorsement from celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus, who posted frequently about their products on social media.[6] Consequently, Goldman Sachs included them in their list of top 50 brands "It Girls" love.[7]

In March 2018, EOS launched an advertising campaign where customers of Kellogg's Special K products could receive a free lip balm.[8]
