A PlusBus ticket is an add-on to most types of National Rail ticket in Great Britain. It gives the customer unlimited travel on participating bus and tram operators' services around the whole urban area of the rail-served town or city (except greater London) that's at the start or end of the rail journey.

Background

The PlusBus ticketing scheme was launched in 2002 and was gradually expanded over the next five years. PlusBus is a National Rail ticketing product, which is funded, managed and promoted by the Journey Solutions partnership. This not-for-profit partnership includes Britain's leading bus and train operating groups: Arriva, First, Go-Ahead, National Express, Stagecoach plus the trade associations: the Confederation of Passenger Transport and the Rail Delivery Group. PlusBus ticketing is therefore an operator-led initiative.

About PlusBus ticketing

PlusBus ticketing is currently available for 280 rail-served towns and cities across Britain (outside greater London). It gives the train traveller unlimited local bus and tram travel around the whole urban area of the origin and/or destination town(s) of their rail journey. There is one travel zone for each PlusBus served town or city, which covers the entire urban area of each place. PlusBus tickets can be used from first bus in the morning to mid-night on the date shown on the ticket - there are no peak-period travel restrictions. PlusBus tickets are standard National Rail credit-card size paper tickets. '+BUS' is printed after the location name that the ticket is valid for. For example: A PlusBus ticket for the Derby will have: 'DERBY+BUS' printed on it.

Adult PlusBus ticket prices start from £2 for a day's travel, in addition to the rail fare. Season tickets are now available for 7-days, a month, 3-months and a year for most destinations (excluding Edinburgh, Nottingham and the West Midlands locations). National Railcard holders get one-third off PlusBus day ticket prices. Children (aged under 16 years old) get 50% off PlusBus day ticket prices.

PlusBus tickets can be purchased (with train tickets) from all National Rail station ticket offices, online from most Train Operating Company websites, from National Rail travel agents and self-service ticket vending machines at selected stations. Over two hundred bus companies and five and tram operators participate in PlusBus ticketing schemes across Britain. Around one million PlusBus tickets are issued each year.[1]
