Nation Builders Corps (NABCO)
Government of Ghana Initiative For University Graduate

Nation Builders Corps also known as NABCO[1] is an initiative introduced by the government of Ghana in other to provide jobs to unemployed university graduate to solve various social problem in both the private and public sectors and build their skills in other to promote economic growth in the country.

Application process

Interested graduate would visit the NABCO website to sign up and provide required supporting documents such as Degree Certificate, NSS Certificate, National Identification Cards to participate in the program or initiative.

A graduate trainee signed up for the program will receive a text message inviting him or her to attend an interview. Successful applicants attend an orientation at the district level. Those applicants who had issues with signing up, had a status of "pending" or were "no show" with respect to their registration could also attend the orientation and receive assistance from the district coordinators to resolve any signing or registration problems encountered.

All orientation attendees are taught the KPI key indicators that would make a NABCO trainee successful on the job. That is,'K' for Knowledge, 'P' for Punctuality and 'I' for Integrity.

Explanation of KPI

  • Knowledge (K) : This is where trainees must learn on the go and are required to apply the knowledge they acquire on the job to enhance productivity
  • Punctuality (P) : This is where trainees must ensure that they report to work earlier than expected, should not look at negative existing organizational culture work concerning going to work early. Trainees are expected to start work early to increase productivity.
  • Integrity (I) : This is where each trainees is expected to be diligent and avoid being corrupt on the job to further enhance productivity and develop of their personal integrity as a whole.

Modules

NABCO has seven modules which a signed up graduate could trained in. Namely; Educate Ghana, Heal Ghana, Digitize Ghana, Feed Ghana, Revenue Ghana, Civic Ghana and Enterprise Ghana.

  • Educate Ghana is a module under which a graduate trainee works in a school as a supporting teacher in basic school teaching in STEM (Science Technology & Mathematics)programs. This is mostly for trained teachers or other disciplines as well.
  • Enterprise Ghana is a module under which a graduate trainee trains and works with business to develop entrepreneurial skills. This module is aimed at engaging graduate discipline of any level.
  • Digitize Ghana is a module under which graduate trainees work in Information Communication Technology (ICT) units of various institution to develop and improve upon their digital skills. This module is aimed at engaging graduate student in ICT and other disciplines as well.
  • Feed Ghana is a model under which graduate trainees work with various agricultural institutions in the country to build capacity and skills. This is aimed at engaging graduate student of any level.
  • Heal Ghana is a module under which graduate trainees work in various hospitals in the country to develop and improving their skills in provision of health services and/or management. This is aimed at engaging graduate student of any level.
  • Civil Ghana is a module under which graduate trainees work in the civil service, receive on the job training to help develop the country. This is aimed at engaging graduate student of any level.
  • Revenue Ghana is a module under which graduate trainees would work with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to develop and improve upon their skills and ability to identify revenue sources and manage revenue generated. This is aimed at engaging graduate who studied Accounting, Finance or student of any level.

NABCO cloth

The NABCO program provides graduate trainees with an African cloth so that they can show that they are part of the program or create some kind of awareness when they go to work. The cloth is supposed to be worn on Mondays and Fridays only. However, the cloth was never distributed to NABCO Trainees[2].

NABCO App

The NABCO team created an app which is called the NABCO App. The app was created to be use by the graduate trainees to clock in and out when they come and leave from work, writing reports, training and getting updates. The app's duty is to monitor the trainees to ensure efficiency and productivity. The app runs on Android, IOS and Windows devices respectively.

Graduation/Passing out ceremony

On the 17th October, 2018 the trainees were invited to a passing out or graduation ceremony through a communique from the coordinator of NABCO Dr. Ibrahim Anyars. He issued out the invitation on behalf of the president[3].[4] On the day of the ceremony, graduates from all nooks and crannies or length and breadth of the country trooped to the Independence or Black Star Square in their numbers. Most trainees from other regions were represented by a few but those from Greater Accra all attended the event. As the trainees were provided a T-Shirt this made the event very colorful.

The president, his vice president and ministers of state who attended the ceremony received a rousing welcome from the trainees.The event commenced with christian and muslim prayers. The master of ceremony for the event was the Minister Designate Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who called upon the NABCO Coordinator, Dr. Ibrahim Anyars, to provide a brief history of how the graduate recruitment began and statistics on who were recruited. Trainees were selected or volunteered matched to modules without any form of training.Representatives from various modules provided statistics on the number of people recruited and the costs associated with the three-year training.

The president's speech was insightful, provided additional statistics about the initiative and how far this initiative would encourage the Ghanaian youth to make a difference in the future. He also commended his vice and his team for the wonderful and amazing job the did bringing this initiative into fruition.
