Lucy Beale is a fictional character in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders. She was played by Casey Anne Rothery until 2004 and is currently played by Melissa Suffield.
Background
Lucy was born on 9 December 1993 along with her twin Peter, to parents Ian and Cindy Beale.
Ian and Cindy had already split up once before the twins' birth, when Ian found out that Lucy's older brother Steven Beale was another man's son. It was not long after their reconciliation that the twins were conceived; however, it was clear that they were not going to be an entirely happy family.
Although Ian was determined to make a go of marriage and brought up Steven as his own child, when Lucy was three Cindy had an affair, hired a hit man to shoot Ian and planned to run off to Italy with Steven, Peter, Lucy and her new man. Although she managed to snatch Steven and Peter, Lucy was picked up from nursery early due to illness and brought back to Ian. For almost a year Lucy was separated from her brothers before Ian kidnapped them back. Lucy was reunited with Cindy when she returned to fight for custody of all three children. Custody was granted but then Cindy was arrested for shooting Ian. She died in childbirth in prison. Lucy's half sister, named Cindy after her mother, is being brought up by her maternal aunt and grandmother.
When Ian fell in love with Melanie Healy, Lucy looked forward to the wedding and to Mel being her stepmother. However, Ian and Mel's relationship was experiencing difficulties, and while Ian thought Mel no longer loved him, Lucy became ill with suspected cancer. When Lucy had some tests and they came back clear, Ian lied to Mel and told her that Lucy had cancer in order to emotionally blackmail Mel into marriage. Ian and Mel married on New Year's Eve 1999, Mel believing that Lucy, then aged six, was dying. As the clock struck midnight into the new Millennium Mel found out the truth and left Ian.
Lucy's second stepmother, Laura, started off as her nanny. Ian and Laura's marriage survived Ian kissing Mel and sleeping with prostitute Janine Butcher, but fell apart after Ian found out Laura had had a one-night stand with Garry Hobbs and thought that the baby Laura was carrying belonged to Garry as Ian had had a vasectomy. Ian threw Laura out on Christmas Day 2002. Meanwhile, Steven went to live with his natural father in New Zealand. The absence of both Steven and Laura made for a very unhappy Christmas and New Year in the Beale household.
Shortly after Laura's death, Ian found out Laura's baby Bobby was his son after all (the vascetomy had been unsuccessful) and Bobby came to live with Ian and the twins. Ian got together with Jane Collins shortly afterwards.
Jane stood up for Lucy when she was bullied by Demi Miller. Jane also calmed Ian down when he found out some boys had tried to sell Lucy and Peter drugs. When Jane moved in with Ian in February 2005, Lucy found Jane's presence hard at first after having seen his previous three marriages fall apart and having got used to him as a single father to her and her brothers. She rebelled and made friends with the much older Stacey Slater, who led her astray by lying and stealing, but they are no longer friends. After initially struggling to accept Jane, Lucy has now bonded with her and they get on very well.
When Ian wanted Gus Smith's dog, Wellard, to be put down, Lucy, Peter and Jane were on Wellard's side and Lucy even bought a 'Save Wellard' T-shirt. After a court case ordered that Wellard be returned to Gus, Ian's family bought a puppy and called him Chips. They said he was a present for Ian.
In 2006, Ian heard that his mother - who lived in South Africa with Ian's half-brother Ben - had died in a car crash. Ian went to South Africa to see Ben and in March 2006, Lucy's uncle Ben (who is two years younger than Lucy) moved in with the family. The arrival of Ben has caused tension in Ian and Jane's relationship, as Jane believes that Ben's father Phil should be allowed access to Ben while Ian believes he should not. On Easter Friday 2006, Lucy informed Ian that Ben had run away. He was later found and returned to Ian, although from early May 2006 has lived with Phil.
Lucy befriended Phil's niece, Courtney Mitchell, when she and her father Grant Mitchell moved to the square, however they have now moved away again.
Before Grant, who was married at the time, moved away, Jane slept with him. Ian eventually found out about this when Phil blurted it out to him, however Lucy and Peter are still unaware of the affair. Ian kept his knowledge secret from Jane and proposed to her. On the 10th October 2006, Ian and Jane informed Peter, Lucy and Bobby that they were getting married.
One morning Lucy started behaving oddly and started asked Ian, Jane, and later her friend Lauren Branning for money. No one would give her any and she wouldn't tell anyone what it was for. She was later seen stealing sanitary towels from the Minute Mart. Jane put her strange behavior down to feeling left out about the wedding, so she asked Lucy if she would like to be her bridesmaid but Lucy said that it was for little kids and rejected Jane's offer. Ian went after her and she told him that it was the anniversary of Cindy's death. Ian said that he didn't think she knew as they had never made a thing of it before.
Ian and Jane also suggested to the children that Jane should adopt them. Whilst Peter thought that it sounded alright, Lucy wasn't happy and told Ian that she missed her real mum and didn't want Jane to become her mother. Ian assured Lucy that the adoption would not go ahead. The next morning, Lucy snapped at Jane that she didn't want to be adopted. Jane found the sanitary towels in Lucy's bag, and decided to take her to Booty for a day of pampering.
Jane talked to Lucy and told her she knew that Lucy had started her periods. She also said she wasn't trying to take Cindy's place in Lucy's life. Lucy then got a hair cut that recalled Cindy's hair.
Trivia
- Lucy and Peter Beale were born the same day their paternal grandfather Pete Beale died. Peter is named after him.
- Lucy has blonde hair and brown eyes.
- Lucy's father Ian's half brother Ben was born in 1996, making Ben younger than her and Peter, his nephew and niece.
- Lucy is a Westlife fan (in the episode where Demi Miller stole her money, she had the money to buy a Westlife mobile phone cover.)
- Casey Anne Rothery played Lucy from the age of 3 months old until 10 years old, before Melissa Suffield took over in 2004. Melissa is nearly a year older than Lucy.
- Since Lucy and Peter were replaced with new actors in 2004, Bobby has rarely been seen with them. The whole family (Ian, Jane, Peter, Lucy and Bobby) did not have a scene together before Tuesday 2 May 2006, but have all been shown together twice since that date.
Mistakes
- Ironically, less than a year after being bullied by Darren and Demi Miller, Darren and Peter are close friends and Lucy and Demi have been shown walking to school together and talking happily. No storyline explaining this change in circumstance has been shown.
- Lucy went from becoming a rebel, hanging out with Stacey Slater and hating Jane, to liking Jane and settling down again. Very few episodes have shown the process of or reasons for this change, and none have shown why she now gets along with Stacey after they fell out. However, this could be explained by the fact that the show's producer has changed three times in less than a year.
