In the fictional Star Wars universe, a Buzz droid is a sinister weapon that was unleashed by the CIS on Republic craft in the later stages of The Clone Wars. Launched from missiles, the Buzz Droids are initially gold spheres. A powerful outer shell dissipates heat, allowing the droids to penetrate the shields of targets. Once they make contact with an enemy fighter craft, however, the spheres open to reveal a complex design. They are four-legged droids resembling insects, with a variety of tools at their disposal, including a prying hook appendage, a circular saw, a plasma cutting torch, a drill head sheathing an extendable computer probe for deployment of invasive programming, a picket appendage, and a pincer arm. With these tools, the droid is able to sabotage and disable its enemy, usually not destroying them. Three sensor eyes allow the droid to examine its surroundings. Its main photoreceptor (eye) is its main weak point, as its major systems (i.e. processor, etc.) are behind it. The other two eyes are mainly to aid in depth perception

Individually the droids are weak, but they are released in swarms, allowing them to defeat opponents through their sheer numbers.

During the Battle of Coruscant, R4-P17 had its head ripped off by a buzz droid. R2-D2 was attacked by one, but disabled it by electrocuting its middle sensor eye.

They appear in the video game adaptation of Revenge of the Sith and are battled within the CIS flagship, The Invisible Hand.

They were first seen when they were launched to disable Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter. Unfortunately, his wingman, Anakin, accidentally destroyed part of Obi-Wan's wing in an (somewhat successful) attempt to shoot them off. Realising the danger of his plan, the Jedi then attempted to brush them off with his own wing, resulting in one climbing onto his Jedi Starfighter where it attacked, but was ultimately disabled by R2-D2.
