Subway Cinema was founded in 1999 by Grady Hendrix, Paul Kazee, Brian Naas, Nat Olsen and Goran Topalovic. Current members include Hendrix, Kazee and Topalovic. Subway Cinema's inaugural event was the 1st ever U.S. retrospective of the cinema of Hong Kong's Milkyway Image. This event, titled "EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED: Contemporary Urban Cinema from Milkyway Image Productions" was held September 15-17, 2000 at the Anthology Film Archives.

Subway Cinema immediately followed this up - also in 2000 - with the first of several "OLD SCHOOL KUNG FU FEST's," as well as with special sneak preview screenings of South Korea's NOWHERE TO HIDE with Director Lee Myung-se in attendance.

In 2001 and 2002, Subway Cinema continued to grow, holding the 1st ever U.S. retrospective of the cinema of Tsui Hark, the 1st edition of the New York Korean Film Festival (titled "WHEN KOREAN CINEMA ATTACKS! (created in partnership with the newly formed "Korean Film Forum," the 1st New York focus on the cinema of Takashi Miike, and the founding of the popular and critically successful, New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF). In 2019, NYAFF became its own entity.
