Orthaspidotherium

Orthaspidotherium was a European Paleocene genus of early herbivorous mammals of the family Pleuraspidotheriidae.[1]

Classification

It was included in the family Meniscotheriidae by Teilhard de Chardin in 1921-1922 and was subsequently separated into the subfamily Pleuraspidotheriinae,[2] before being placed in the family Phenacodontidae by Williamson and Lucas (1992).[1] However, Zack et al. (2005) considered the subfamily Pleuraspidotheriinae to belong in Hyopsodontidae.[3] The first complete skull, of Orthaspidotherium edwardsi, was described by Ladeveze et al. (2010), who demonstrated that Pleuraspidotheriidae was a distinct family in its own right, more closely related to artiodactyls than to perissodactyls or phenacodontids.[4][5]
